Facial peeling: what it is, types and benefits
Facial peeling can refer to very different things: an at-home exfoliating product, a peel-off mask or a professional chemical peel. Knowing which one you are looking at helps you choose the right product and avoid using it as a substitute for a different treatment.
What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation removes dead cells from the skin’s surface. Some products use physical action; others use exfoliating ingredients. The method and frequency should match the individual formula and your skin’s tolerance.
Peeling gel, peel-off mask or professional peel?
- Peeling gel: an at-home cosmetic product used according to its application and rinsing instructions.
- Peel-off or wrapping mask: a mask format. The fact that a film peels off does not mean it works like an exfoliating acid.
- Professional chemical peel: a procedure to discuss with a qualified clinician. A retail mask is not an equivalent treatment for scars or a skin condition.

Pyunkang Yul Peeling Gel is the product in our exfoliating-step collection. Read its directions before using it. If you wanted a mask instead, compare sheet, gel and wrapping masks.
How often should I exfoliate?
There is no single schedule for every product and skin type. Exfoliation is optional. Avoid over-exfoliating or using an exfoliant on sunburned, wounded or irritated skin. Follow with moisturizer and stop if irritation develops.
The American Academy of Dermatology explains why your existing skincare, skin type and chosen method matter in its guide to safer at-home exfoliation.
Complete a simple routine
Choose a moisturizer and read our routine steps guide. You do not need a peel, scrub and exfoliating pads in the same routine.
